There are many big cold deserts located all around the world. The biggest desert in all of the world is a cold one. This is the Antarctic Desert. Other cold deserts include the Gobi and Patagonian Deserts.
Antarctica is covered in 98% ice and has on average 200mm of precipitation a year. It is very cold in Antarctica and has reached at its lowest -89 degrees showing just how cold it is.
One of three birds that breed only in Antarctica is the snow petrel, a small white bird with a black beak and a black under neck. It has a wingspan of 76-79 cm and reaches a length of
41 cm. Other animals that are found in these cold areas are penguins, many species of seals and whales.
In many cold deserts flora cannot grow because of the lack of sunlight, bad soil, lack of moisture and of corse the freezing temperatures found in these places. Although, there are many types of mosses and liverworts. Some flowering plants found in these extreme conditions are the Antarctic hair grass and the Antarctic pearlwort.
